[modifier] Life Is Thoughts And Not The Body
15th November 1933
-- Baba went to see Dolly at Ahmednagar who was feeling very depressed during Baba’s absence. To her Baba gave an enlightening discourse. Describing that the life is thoughts and not the body he said—
« Cease the mental tension. Train your mind to pass over thoughts. You say you don’t like to live. You feel tired of this life and this body. Unwelcome thoughts, bad thoughts, disturb you and make you unhappy. But life is thoughts, not body. The body is there when you are asleep. You then don’t feel the need to end your life. The moment you are awake, you begin to think again. In truth, nobody is satisfied with his lot. Nobody feels completely happy in this world. You know the great position and wealth of XX. Yet when he saw me, he was a very unhappy man ! Why should you be unhappy ? You are neither too tall, nor too fat. You are quite healthy. You can read, you can write. Think of the poor creatures, the paralysed, the lepers and the disabled. The paralytic or the leper knows that he is progressing towards a sure death, and is likely to die in a worse state than he is in. Yet, there are thousands like these dragging on their days silently. Why not compare your lot with the dumb, illiterate millions in the country ? You are more fortunate. You live and move in the surroundings of a Master. What is there in the Himalyas and the Jungles ? Did you not see the picture « Tarzan » depicting the jungle life, full of strife and struggles ? In spite of getting bad thoughts, you do not indulge in bad actions ; therefore what higher life can you live than this ? It is good to have bad thoughts so long as you do not interpret them into actions, as thereby you get an opportunity to exercise control. If no thoughts assail you, what is the difference between you and the stone which has no thoughts at all ? Cease the mental tension. Train your mind to pass over thoughts. Don’t countenance them until such time that you can surrender the mind itself. No one is doing it. When the mind is surrendered, there is no question of happiness or unhappiness. Because of the thoughts the past lives ‘samskaras’ (impressions) are spent away. They come and go. Mind them not. It is like the wound-up alarm clock. It will ring at the appropriate time, but only as long as the winding is there. Let it ring and run its course ; but take care not to wind it again by indulging into actions. »
« Still, if you want to die, die in my ‘Naad’ (Infatuation) by getting hold of Me firmly. There is salvation. That is real dying. Worldly death is not the thing. However, nobody has so far ‘captured’ Me. If one really gets Me, I try to free myself. But so far I have had not opportunity of freeing Myself. On the contrary, it is I who have been trying to catch hold of you people. »
« Remember this much that the whole world is nothing but a Zero, and everything connected with it is without sum and substance. Mind is the Universe. Mind is the man, the woman, the beast. »
[modifier] Much Love Of A Child
On 22nd February 1954, at 11.00 pm ; Beloved Meher Baba arrived by car, at Eluru. His host had made necessary arrangements for accomodation of Baba and His mandali and other Baba lovers who accompanied Him. His darshan programme was announced through the media of press and also through hand-bills.
One of the hand bills fell into the hands of a four year child while he was on his way back home. It was 23rd February. Hand bill was containing Beloved Baba’s Picture also. The boy took the hand bill home and asked his parents to take him to have darshan of Beloved Baba.
Boy’s parents were orthodox Brahmins and they were not interested in visiting Baba whom they thought to be a Parsi Saint. First they tried to distract the child. But the child persisted to be taken to Beloved Baba. Father got angry with the child and beat him with a cane-stick. The child cried but he continued his plea to have Meher Baba’s darshan.
He refused to have his night dinner unless his father took him to Beloved Baba. But the father did not budge an inch. So poor child slept without food. He cried within his heart keeping the hand-bill under his pillow which was carrying Beloved Baba’s photo also.
The next morning i.e. on 24th February, this child went to school with a broken heart. On this day Meher Baba had a programme to visit certain schools and organisations. He was to visit the hornes of Baba lovers also. As He was proceeding in a car He suddenly altered the arranged schedule and asked to stop the car, just infront of this heart broken child’s school.
Getting down from the car Beloved Baba walked straight into the class room where this child was sitting. For a moment child was wonder struck to have Beloved Baba before him and then rushed to fling himself into Baba’s waiting arms. Baba took him to His loving and compassionate arms, caressing the child. Before teacher and students could realize what is happening, Beloved Baba had picked up the child and folded him in His warm embrace. The boy was seen with tears of joy rolling down from his eyes and then Baba left the school and proceeded as per His programme.
When the child returned home with unbounded happiness, and told his parents what had happened in the school, the father was deeply touched by Beloved Meher Baba’s love towards his child. That evening the whole family went to the house where Beloved Meher Baba was staying, and had Baba’s darshan, and father asked Baba to forgive him.
[modifier] Am I Not Your Father
A Baba lover once took his widow mother for Beloved Meher Baba’s darshan with the hope that it would act as a healing balm on her deeply wounded heart. When they sat in front of Baba in the darshan hall at Guruprasad, Poona, Baba looked at them with great understanding and compassion. Baba’s eyes rested on the son and He asked—
‘Where are you all staying ?’
‘At Ganeshkhind Baba.’
‘Why are you living so far from here ? Could you not stay in a hotel near this place ?’
‘Baba..’ the son hesitatingly replied ; ‘it’s firstly because my cousin resides at Ganeshkhind’.
‘Is that all ?’ Baba asked. Baba lover knew that Baba will have to be explained fully as He will not leave at that ! So he replied—‘Baba it is also because my mother doesn’t want to eat food cooked at a hotel.’
‘Why does she not want to eat food cooked at a hotel ?’—Baba asked.
‘Baba, because she has become a widow and as per our customs a widow takes food prepared by herself or by some relative who should be a brahmin.’
Baba’s eyes peered into the son’s eye on his statement. After a moment’s pause He said to the son—‘Arn I not your Father ?’
With eyes full of tears, the son replied ; ‘Yes ; Baba, you are—you are indeed my Father.’
‘Well ; how can your mother be a widow then ?’ Baba pointed out His finger at mother.
‘You are right Baba ; she can’t be a widow’ the son replied.
Baba’s face suddenly assumed brightness and austerity. With calm but divine seriousness He further gestured with His hand making a circle in the air.
He said—‘I am the husband and father of the entire Universe. Know that for sure.’
The son bowed down his head in assent. Baba continued—‘There is no need for your mother to shun food prepared at hotels and feel that she is a widow’.
The son told his mother what Baba conveyed. He told her not to feel like a widow bereft of a husband because she had Baba’s grace—the symbol of help and the protection. His mother perhaps did not quite understand all that was meant. But after leaving Guruprasad Hall, the son noticed a change coming over his mother slowly but steadily. She began to come out of her mental gloom. Baba had started healing her wounded mind, her tortured heart in His imperceptible manner from that moment on.
The mother and the son stayed for a fortnight. On the last day of departure to have a parting darshan of Beloved Baba, the mother and the son took an auto and started for Guruprasad. While on their way to Guruprasad the mother with a sigh of longing said to her son—‘I wanted to have a ride in Baba’s car !’
The son said—‘What are you dreaming of, mamma ? This is a child-like expectation on your part. Who can travel by Baba’s car. It is meant for His use and for the use by His mandali. So ; give up this childish idea ?’ She kept quiet thinking that Baba’s car was meant for Baba—The God-man. The auto reached Guruprasad. As they reached the porch of Guruprasad, one of the Mandali came out and informed them that Baba has left for a house visit a few minutes back ; but ; He has left His car for your mother and yourself to go to Poona Railway Station. So ; please go in it to the Railway Station, otherwise you people will be missing the train ».
The mother looked proud as her wish was fulfilled and said to the son ‘You talked as you were not my child but my father. But see, how Baba, the (Antaryami) Omniscient One, has fullfilled my desire to travel by His car. So remain a child that you are, O.K. ?’
How fortunate were the mother and the son who were indeed beloved and taken care of by the One who knew the slightest wish and thought that sparkled in any mind in the world !
Why not ? After all He is having a Universal Mind’.
[modifier] Silence That Sopke So Powerfully !
Meher Baba used to travel by bus, train, bullock cart within the country. He would travel in third class or Inter class compartment, while travelling by a train. It was war time and the trains were heavily crowded. To get a seat for Meher Baba was a big problem before the Mandali who used to travel with Baba.
Once it so happened that the train was full. There were certain compartments reserved for military personnel. There was one such compartment in which hardly five — six military personnel were there. The Mandali and Baba could get into the same after a lot of pleadings. All were happy to get comfortable seat for Baba. They chatted with each other and became friendly with co-travellers.
It is now at the next station, a lot of military personnel started getting into this compartment and since the comforts of military people, who were already seated, was disturbed, the trouble started. They picked up the fight with the new comers. Before Baba and mandali could recognise what is happening ; it became a riot like situation in the moving train. Each one was having a rifle and many had hockey sticks also. So they started shouting at each other, raising rifle butts and hockey sticks etc. It was a frightening scene.
Suddenly Baba stood on the bench and gave a clap of His hands. The effect was instantaneous. All stopped fighting and looked up at this man (Baba) with a white robe with arms outspread and hands turned up in a gesture of ‘Stop’. Baba started speaking through gestures to them. Bro. Eruch conveyed them that they should not fight amongst themselves. Their fighting should be reserved only for the protection of their country. After a while Baba gestured all of them to sit down and they obeyed Baba instantaneously. On this Baba also sat down and promised all of them a tea party at the next station. At this kind gesture of Baba, all of them cheered and became friends. Baba did give Tea party to all in the compartment.
Thus spoke His silence so powerfully which stopped a difficult situation which otherwise would have arisen !
